I too am frustrated in trying to set up my new HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus printer. I have been an HP fan. This is my 5th HP printer. Over time company support has waned to the point of 'here it is, hope it works'. It is difficult to believe that a company as large as HP doesn't periodically hold focus groups to assess customer concerns. I think part of the issue is the assumption on the part of technically savy people that the rest of us have the same cumulative body of knowledge with respect to basic technology. To paraphase a quote, the devil is in the details. Regular people need step by step details. FAQ's are great but what if your question isn't there? I can't get the print cartridge carriage to move. A printer without ink is an issue. Who do you ask? Dear HP, please, please don't drive me to another brand. Help the regular people.

I'll have to trust you on the 39 thing. :-)

Thanks for dropping by. Hopefully, some of the stuff I write about will interest you. It's a real potpourri, though. I'm still trying to find the blog voice...and the motivation to keep at it.

Nice to meet you, Ken. We both just got a mention on Change Over 40 (even though I'm 39 -- really, I am), so I thought I'd come see who you are.

Again, nice to meet you. Come visit me at my blog if you have the chance.

Yeah. It's a real pain when things don't work the way they're supposed to right out of the box. The worst part is that HP on Twitter - which seems to be the only way I can get anyone - takes days to reply and now they want me to e-mail them. Sheesh. Why can't they just have a decent customer service hotline or a good manual?

I JUST purchased my 8600 pro this weekend and tried installing it on my brand new windows 7 PC. Unlike your printer, mine came with all working parts, USB and ink cartridges, as evidenced by the fact that it immediately worked when I printed a B&W doc and a color photo (& tried some simply copying to test the sheet feeder (clever the way they used the same scan head for the flatbed or the fed docs)).
So, with 1 thing left to test (not really interested in the fax) I tried a scan. FAIL! I tried the scan from the printer, form HP's software, from a 3rd party software using TWAIN and finally form MS Scan and Fax utility bundled with win 7. They all start the scan proving there is communication then as the scan head starts to move it freezes and the thing reports an error that there is no communication with the device (obviously not true).
Now, when I installed this software I chose to opt out of 3 of the 5 bloat programs that came on the installation disk. I have since been told that one of them, labeled to report your usage to HP for them to improve the product, is actually needed for scanning. I tried installing this but to no avail. I will try next installing everything then reinstalling it all together.
It is truly disheartening how untested this seems to be. By the way, my problem isn't unique, I have checked around and many people seem to be experiencing this issue.

Thanks, Margoax. I've heard that, too. It's putting it into practice that's the tough part. Getting my wife to go along is a little tough sometimes, too. Although, she tends to be a little happier in life than I am...most of the time.

It is a proven fact that when you say/think of all the things that you are greatful for, you are more happy. Also, in a psychology book I read, when you smile(even if you don't feel that way) it will not only cheer you up, but it can effect total strangers as well as those around you that you care about in a positive way. That compiled with reminding yourself that there are people that are a lot worse off always cheers me up a little. Hope that helps you some.

Thank you, Maria, for pointing me in the right direction.

The paper tray that came with my HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus <em>does not</em> handle legal size paper at all. The 8.5" x 14" is <em>physically too long</em> for the paper tray. I checked out <a href="http://www.shopping.hp.com/product/printer/inkjet/paper_handling/4/accessories/CN548A" title="Additional Paper Tray for the HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">the surplus tray</a> for the all-in-one (currently out of stock). Unfortunately, it doesn't indicate if it handle 8.5" x 14" (legal size) paper and I am loathe to spend another $80 just to find out it doesn't work.

What I thought you be a cost effective alternative to buying <em>genuine </em>Oklidata parts to see if I could get my Okidata C6050 printing properly again has turned into a nightmare of being nickle and dimed with more expenses (the ink cartridge, for one) and not being able to <em>easily </em>use a lot of features I have come to expect in a printer.

Thank you, though, for pointing me to a help page. That, in and of itself, was a big help!

Maybe this will help? http://h71036.www7.hp.com/hho/us/en/ep/articles/handle-legal-sized-documents.html (see "Prepare to print with legal paper" and "Make legal-sized the default paper setting").

HP's website is not very intuitive. I spent more time that I would have liked on there today finding a part for a client's laptop. I definitely seen better.
