Snarky

Is it just me or has anyone else been noticing that there are quite a few blogs out there that are downright snarky.

You know, they’re not outright bitchy or obscene or too obnoxious but they have this tone that they are really, really cool.  Or they could care less what you think and if you don;t like it, well, just click to the next blog.  Or they are the ones that are in the know so you should hand on their every word.

The Bitch Slap

It reminds me a little of what some people call “rough trade” (not that I would know personally, you understand).  It’s the kind of transaction where the participants don’t mind getting roughed up a little bit.  It’s OK if you tie me up and slap me around and call me names because I might get excited by that kind of thing.

Obviously, if you put on this persona where you’re just on the edge of being obnoxious but not too obnoxious, it gives you some authority.  Like being a dominatrix.  Complete with the black boots with stiletto heals and the whips.

The Didact

The other side of this is someone who, while not too edgy, is very obviously asserting hims or herself as the authority.  Of course, in the blogosphere, Authority is supposed to be the holy grail.  If you come across as knowing more about something than anyone else then it’s an easy next step to getting lots of traffic and readership and product selling.

I don’t normally have anything against the didact if they come across in helpful way.  More often than not, they don’t.  It’s kind of like “this is the way it is”.  Why?  Because they say so.

Finding A Voice

I supposed what this all really boils down to is finding a voice that one (me?) can feel comfortable with and develop.  The Voice, I’m told, will convey authenticity and be able to develop a following.  After all, what blogger really want to be just writing to himself.  For some, the snarky persona really works well.  Although I wonder what they’re like, in person, and wonder if I would like them.

For me, I’m just trying to find out what I can write about on a fairly constant basis.   True life, what I aspire to, my fantasies or just my observations on what the heck is going on in the world of cyberspace.
