The Housewarming Party

It’s always nice to be invited to someone’s housewarming party.

It means they usually have you on the “good guys” list and not the “duck into the next aisle if I see them at the grocery store” list.  It’s especially nice if you happen to have been the Realtor that helped them find and buy the house that they’re warming.

So it was this afternoon.  Some very nice clients invited me and my wife over to their new home to enjoy an open house style house warming. You know the kind of party.  It’s kind of like the Christmas open house.  Set a time limit and people come and go all during the 4 hour period or whatever.  People bring nice stuff – wine, desserts, dips, etc.

My Two Favorite Foods – Free and More

That’s just it.  There was the requisite vegetable platter and the requisite fruit array.  There was also the pita chips and hummus. Cheese and crackers. Little chicken bites, sausages, dips galore and…the dessert room. Filled with all kinds of goodies. I love goodies.

So, I’m trying to tell myself to take it easy. Everything in moderation.  I load up on some pineapple chunks.  Some cucumber slices.  A few wheat thin type things.  But I also load up on some of the dessert-y things – cookies, pie, some very rich chocolate truffles.

The Moderation Thing

I really tried to be moderate but I still haven’t learned that when there is really an almost unlimited amount of food I really don’t have to eat everything.

However, I didn’t eat as much as I might have otherwise and, maybe more importantly, my wife and I left about 5:00pm so there was still the entire evening to let the food digest and work it’s way through my system without eating more.  In fact, I was quite full and didn’t want to eat more.  So, hopefully, it won’t be a major setback.

Moderation, moderation, moderation.

Damn.

Dessert First

In my last post I was, er, belly achin’ about being so fat.  It’s true.  I’m a porker who is a string bean wannabe.  And I know why I’m one heavy dude. I love the sweet stuff.  Yeah.  I love the starchy stuff, too. Bread, potatoes, rice.

It has been said, more than once, that a diet that is sure fire to work is to eliminate all the white stuff from your diet.

Sugar…Flour…Dairy

In other words, all the stuff you like and have grown accustomed to is out, out, out.

Which brings me to a recent post I read on an interesting and downright amusing blog called How To Get A Grip. The post: Start With Dessert.  The idea is that since you never know when you’ll kick the bucket, you might as well do the fun stuff now…and early.

Of course, I’ve been doing that with food for awhile.  Cake, ice cream, cookies.  You name it. I stuck it in my mouth.  The fun has now caught up with me and I’m so fat I can barely get on a plane or visit a movie theater and let’s forget the booths in restaurant.  Ironic, huh?  I’ve gotten so big I need a table or take out.

I get the point about not putting off life’s little pleasures while you doggedly try to become “a success” but the idea of doing all the fun stuff becuase I’ll be dead any minute doesn’t get it, either.  Do enough of the fun stuff and you may be living and miserable.

It might be better to spread it out.  Maybe.

Any thoughts?
