The Underbelly of Internet Marketing

In a recent blog post, Super Affiliate Internet Marketer Lynn Terry, laid bare the underbelly of the current state of Internet Marketing.

Lynn has been at this thing a long time and she has built both a life and a following based on Internet Marketing strategies that were ethical and profitable. Over time, she has found that the whole Internet Marketing “space” getting more and more cluttered with the “get rich quick” (as in overnight) schemers who have never used the systems they promote.  To make matters worse, they have a profane and vulgar stage presence at seminars and other live events that Internet Marketers produce.

My Take

I like Lynn and I met her at a live event a few months ago.  She’s personable and “real”. So when she writes about how disgusted she has become with the current state of the Internet Marketing space, I sit up and take notice.

I have also found her perspective to be true from my own experience.

I can’t count how many tweets go through my Twitter timeline that are simple links to squeeze pages or sales pages promising untold riches or a map to Easy Street.  Just click the PayPal button.  It reminds me of the old saying, “You pays your money and you takes your chances.” Ditto the number of Internet Marketing people who want to be my friends on Facebook.

I’ve paid for subscription memberships to programs that have promised to show me the way to work-at-home success and attended more than a few live events/seminars/workshops that also promise to put me on the road to financial independence.  Just call me a sucker for a good pitch.

I have finally learned that there is not “Easy button” (unless you go to Staples and buy one), the “Kaching button” from Joel Comm doesn’t cause money to magically appear, either.  No, Internet Marketing, like any other work, is work and if you don’t know what you’re doing or why it’s easy to be taken to the cleaners and then hung out to dry.

PS … none of the links in the blog post are affiliate links so feel free to click away.  the stuff in the sidebar will put a few pennies in my pocket if you decide to use them.

  1. I have an easy button. It, like many other products, doesn’t live up to the hype. I bought an ebook once on how to succeed as a computer/network consultant. Was horrified to read on his blog, just a few months later, about how he was failing in his own computer consulting business.

Thanks for the link to Lynn’s blog. Going to read it now.
